Weekend in Ribeauvillé: An Immersion in an Alsatian Medieval Village

27/06/2025 00:00

Nestled between vineyards and mountains, Ribeauvillé is a medieval town with incomparable charm. This Alsatian village invites you on a true journey back to the time of gallant knights and is a must-see stop on the famous Alsace Wine Route. Join us for an unforgettable immersion in one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Alsace!

A Village Steeped in History

With its cobbled streets, colourful half-timbered houses and remains of fortifications, Ribeauvillé perfectly embodies the image of an Alsatian medieval village.

Once the stronghold of the Lords of Ribeaupierre, the town still bears traces of its past, notably through its three hilltop castles: Saint-Ulrich, Girsberg, and Haut-Ribeaupierre (accessible via a short hike from Ribeauvillé town centre).

The Butchers' Tower, the only surviving gate tower from the Middle Ages, also bears witness to the past, having served as a defensive structure, belfry, and prison.

Other notable sites include the 18th-century Town Hall, several fountains (notably those in front of the town hall), the Pfifferhus (Minstrels’ House), Saint Gregory’s Church, and Sainte Catherine’s Chapel—each worthy of close attention.

A Land of Flavours

Ribeauvillé is a haven for gourmets. Here, Alsatian specialities are enjoyed generously: tarte flambée, sauerkraut, baeckeoffe, kougelhopf… Strolling through this beautiful medieval town, you’ll find countless spots to grab a bite, as well as many restaurants and typical Alsatian winstubs.

And of course, the local wines (Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Muscat, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir) are an absolute must. A visit to one of the renowned vineyards or Ribeauvillé’s wine cellars is an essential part of your stay.

Authentic Medieval Festivities

Ribeauvillé hosts several major events throughout the year, some deeply rooted in the medieval atmosphere:

  • The Medieval Christmas Market – Every year, Ribeauvillé offers a unique Christmas market that transports you to the era of troubadours and knights. Amidst the Christmas magic, you’ll see minstrels, dancers, and fire-eaters in medieval garb. You can even savour a delicious spit-roasted wild boar!
  • The Minstrels’ Festival (Pfifferdaj) – In early September, the “Pfif”, as the locals call it, brings the village to life for an entire weekend. One of Alsace’s oldest festivals, it celebrates the historical ties with musicians and troubadours. The highlight is the grand parade of floats, created by nearly 1,500 volunteers from Ribeauvillé’s associations, telling a different enchanting story each year.
